The World Cup has turned and left me here......

The World Cup has turned and left me here......

So Spain it is, a victory for football by all accounts. The final, while not a great game of football, was crammed full of incident and drama, amazing refereeing decisions and even crazier challenges by players (see above photo) so Webb never stood a chance, and therefore the Dutch daring to have a go at the ref is just stupid. My major gripe with the Dutch is that they could have easily have won that final if they tried to play football for a few minutes, Spain's defence showed on a number of occasions they weren't up to scratch and could easily have been got at, but van Marwijk must have decided he had too many average players and decided they couldn't do it. So my prediction of 2-1 fell arseways again, but that was down to masterful goalkeeping at both ends rather than anything else. The third place playoff turned out to be a cracker with both teams going gung ho, and I must admit it was a little bit heart wrenching to see Forlan's free kick in the last second bou

The Final Countdown...

The Final Countdown...

Netherlands 3-2 Uruguay (PREDICTION 3-1) So as predicted the Dutch were too good for the Uruguayans, but only just, with Van Bronkhorst scoring the goal of the tournament if you ask me. Good to see an edgy finish to the match with Uruguay getting a second even though it ruined my prediction. It really is an amazing achievement for the Dutch getting to the final when you go through the squad and see how average they are, Heitinga, Van Bommel, de Jong, Kuyt, I could go on, but the bit of class with Sneijder and Robben seems to be enough for them. Germany 0-1 Spain (PREDICTION 2-2, GER on pens) Poor old Germany couldn't get near the ball. It seemed the youthful energy that got them this far cost them in the end with no one in the team with enough leadership or experience to drag them into the game, which was a shame because I thought they could get goals on the break. So predictions: THIRD PLACE PLAYOFF Germany 2-1 Uruguay FINAL Spain 2-1 Holland (Van Bommel to get a

Dutch Oven Too Hot for Brazil

Dutch Oven Too Hot for Brazil

2nd July Netherlands 2-1 Brazil (PREDICTION 2-1!!!!) Uruguay 1-1 Ghana (AET, Uruguay on penalties) (PREDICTION 1-2) Again another absolutely stellar start to the round predictions wise, most people looked at me as if I was mental when I said I fancied the Dutch, but there's just enough about them to go all the way. Van Persie still ain't up to much but it doesn't seem to matter. Only real problem I have with Brazil going out is it means the crowd shots in matches will be less attractive. So to the other game and Suarez gets his comeuppance, have no sympathy for the lad, spent the tournament diving and just glad the ref saw it. At least Suarez joins Kewell with a shot for best keeper at the tournament, well best save at least. Gyan, sorry bud, but why didn't you take the first penalty like you did the second? 3rd July Argentina 0-4 Germany (PREDICTION 3-2) Paraguay 0-1 Spain (PREDICTION 0-2) So Germany continue to ruin my predictions, and fair play to them

England go out, most people don't really mind...

26th June Uruguay 2-1 South Korea (PREDICTION 2-1!!) USA 1-2 Ghana (aet)  (PREDICTION 1-0) So again a great start for my predictions, but all downhill from there. Was over in London watching two They Might Be Giants gigs so only got to watch the second half of the first game and it was mainly South Korea chasing the game from what I saw. Anyway then the Yanks went unfortuantely, so the romance of an African team lives on, and Keegan reckons they can beat Uruguay, so who am I to disagree. 27th June Germany 4-1 England (PREDICTION 1-1, Eng on pens) Argentina 3-1 Mexico (PREDICTION 2-1 and at least one red card...) So the most bizaare day of the World cup anyway. Still think people are being slightly (just slightly!) unfair to England with the disallowed goal, at 2-2 there's no way they would have chased the game and Capello would have had them camped in their own half to compensate for Terry and Upson being unable to run. And as for the Mexico game, can we get of rid o

I still reckon Italy can do it.......

I still reckon Italy can do it.......

So predicted 8 results correctly and two perfect scores! 21st June Portugal 7-0 North Korea (PREDICTION 2-0) Well slightly misjudged the N Korean defence there, Ronaldo's goal at least raised a smile. Chile 1-0 Switzerland (PREDICTION 1-1) In another of the World Cup bore-fests Chile thankfully got a goal through ex-Liverpudlian Gonzalez to set up the last round of the group stages with the Swiss and the Spanish on equal points. Spain 2-0 Honduras (PREDICTION 4-0) The Spanish were quite wasteful in this game, Villa missed a penalty and their problems in the wide areas persist as does Torres struggling and their defence. 22nd June Mexico 0-1 Uruguay (PREDICTION 0-0) France 1-2 South Africa (PREDICTION 1-0) Can't believe there was a winner in the Mex-Uru game convinced the two would play out the dull 0-0 that they needed to both go through, but fair play to Uruguay they went and won the group. The French campaign ended in shame again, but at least they scored a go

"We're all behind the manager but Joe Cole should start..."

No predicted scores correct, alright!! Again I didn't see all of all of these games so.... THURS 17th JUNE Argentina 4-1 South Korea (PREDICTION 2-1) Well Argentina cruised this for the majority, although when they conceded from DiMichelis daydreaming, it nearly went 2-2, but Argentina were worthy winners, and I must say looked better off with Aguero on than Tevez. Higuain first player to score World Cup hat-trick since 2002. Greece 2-1 Nigeria  (PREDICTION 0-2) Bastards. My prediction was looking good until Kaita decided to be a git and get sent off. First Greek win in a World Cup apparently. France 0-2 Mexico (PREDICTION 1-1) Well, well, well. Piss poor again. My problem with France isn't the handball etc, it's the fact that they're crap. Mexico kept the ball well and did all the attacking. Great to see Hernandez score, who looked alright which is a bonus as ManU fan. Anelka getting sent home I'd say made McCarthy and Keane chuckle but I don't kno

The End of the First Round of the First Round...

The End of the First Round of the First Round...

...or as I was going to call it "Isn't it a shame Ron Atkinson isn't commentating on Africa's first World Cup". So a lot of these games I didn't get to see in full so this will be quick. MON 14th June Holland 2-0 Denmark (PREDICTION 2-0!) (Agger OG, Kuyt) Great start of the day predictions wise for me, I even cheered Poulsen clearing the ball off the line to keep it 2-0, even though goals have been hard to come by so far. Holland looked alright, basically deciding to be like every other team in this World Cup and not look great too early on. Japan 1-0 Cameroon (PREDICTION 0-1) (Honda) Didn't see much of this, from what I did see Cameroon looked awful and Japan looked okay. Italy 1-1 Paraguay (PREDICTION 1-0) (de Rossi, Alcaraz) Can't get over this result, considering Paraguay have normally only managed two shots on goal per game that I've seen them play so to see them take the lead was incredible. Italy missed Pirlo and a striker, bu

So 3 days in.....

So 3 days in.....

Let's see how it went.... FRI 11th June South Africa 1-1 Mexico (SA - Tshabalala, MEX - Marquez) Decent opening game, both teams passed the ball quite well. Tshabalala's goal was great, even though his name reminds me of Tony Christie's "(Is This The Way To) Amarillo", but South Africa's defence means they probably won't go far, which is a shame as you really do need a host nation to stay in it for a bit. France 0-0 Uruguay Highlight of this match was Henry appealing for a penalty for handball. That was it. SAT 12th June South Korea 2-0 Greece (Lee Jung-Soo, Park Ji Sung) First real quality performance from a team, South Korea completely outplayed Greece and completely compensated for their lack of height and strength compared to Greece, who seem really poor and I can't see them even getting a point to be honest. Argentina 1- 0 Nigeria (Heinze) I don't know how this game finished one-nil to be honest, Argentina should have won

World Cup 2010 is about to begin...

So that was a quick four years anyway. Fantasy league done, credit card put away (sorry paddypower, it's on holidays) and the coke zero is in the fridge. The only drawback is of course the afternoon kick-offs which is going to be a bummer during work, but I'll just have to cope. Now predictions wise I don't really know who I'm gonna back. Maybe Italy just because they nearly always do what they need to and the only thing they are a missing for me is a striker, but then you can't really look past Germany, Brazil, France, Spain, England, Holland or Argentina either...Seriously though I do hope England have a good run in the World Cup just so I can laugh at all the hype and coverage Sky Sports News will throw at it. As regards backing an African team, Ghana missing Essien and Muntari doubtful I'd say no, so I'd say Nigeria may be the ones to watch. So hopefully the World Cup can keep pace with the opening ceremony which had a performance from R K
